Texas Governor Greg Abbott apparently stopped an attempt by Texas Lottery Commission officials to make a deal with the fantasy sports site ‘Draft Kings.’
Lottery Commission officials had reportedly been communicating with Draft Kings officials for months in 2015. It’s just the latest in what seems like a growing attempt to bring more gambling to Texas as a way to create revenue for the state.
Besides Draft Kings, we’ve heard about attempts to bring casino gambling to Texas. The recent $1.6B Powerball jackpot had everyone talking. Are we obsessed? Tony McDonald at Empower Texans, a conservative financial think tank in Austin, says that’s not it because numbers show less people are gambling. So what is it?
“There are certain players who see an opportunity to make a lot of money, which means there’s a lot of advertising involved,” McDonald told KTRH News.
And McDonald says Governor Abbott did the right thing by stepping in.
“I’m very proud of what he did, telling them that if there is a law they need to follow it, and if they don’t like the law, go to the Texas legislature, because they are the ones that make the laws,” McDonald explained.
Legalized gambling can lead to scandals, like the one the sport of tennis is currently dealing with right now involving alleged match fixing by some top players in major tournaments like Wimbledon.
